Got Persistent Skin Issues? Here's What You Could Be Doing Wrong ...

Persistent skin issues

The question I get asked a lot in my work as an online Skin Therapist is ...

Why do you suggest holistic health remedies (like Juice Plus supplements, exercise, self love activities and mindfulness) to help people heal their skin, more than you recommend actual skincare products?

And how the heck do you do it online?!

Trust me, it also blows my mind that I could be treating people’s skin:

  1. without offering hands on treatments like facials, and

  2. using holistic treatments options (and seeing even better results than I do from just suggesting topical treatments!)

To shed some light on why I work the way I do, and to offer those of you who may struggle with persistent skin challenges some solutions, I want to share my journey in the skincare industry, and with my own skin, with you.

When I was younger, I owned my own skin salon. I worked with all types of skin and skin conditions, and provided a wide array of services and treatments. Although I saw some amazing results in my salon, I came to realise, very soon on in my career, that most people’s skin conditions were a result of poor diet and lifestyle choices. And while topical treatments (as in, actual skincare products) helped them heal to some extent, they had very little impact in the long term if the person was not healthy on the inside, and in other areas of their life.

The lifestyle factors I saw having the biggest impact on people’s skin were:

  • Diet

  • Exercise

  • Stress

  • A poor relationship with self (inc. negative self talk), and

  • Poor gut health.

As someone who had been professionally trained to think that good skincare products could heal all skin problems, this realisation blew my mind. In fact, it took a long time for me to actually believe that our skin is a reflection of our inner wellness. But there’s only so much denying you can do when you see the same results over and over again and that’s what kept happening - I kept seeing a small amount of progress when treating people’s skin only topically, and a huge amount of success when I combined topical and holistic treatments (like healthy eating, movement, mindfulness and self love practices).

The cherry on top of the cake was when my own skin broke out in psoriasis. I immediately changed the skincare products I was using - but it didn’t get any better. It wasn’t until I spoke with a Nutritionist that I realised my body was trying to communicate with me and tell me, through my skin, that my lifestyle needed an overhaul and that I needed a whole lot more than just a good topical product to heal my psoriasis.

At that point in my life I was living off of take away food and caffeine, barely exercising, trying to build a business (and maintain a social life at the same time!) and just generally, pushing my body and emotions to their limits.

Because change felt too overwhelming for me and I didn’t know where to start, my Nutritionist suggested that I join her 16 week online holistic health program, The Healthstyle Emporium. Even though I was sceptical (and may have laughed in her face at the time), my desperation led me to giving it a go.

I ordered my first package from Juice Plus - the nutritional supplement you take throughout the 16 week online health program, and that I still take two years later! - and got started.

In all honesty, at first, I didn’t believe the products and program were going to make much of a difference to the health and appearance of my skin. In fact, for the first couple of weeks my skin seemed to get worse. Being a Skin Therapist, I knew this was a normal part of the detox process, but I still panicked and questioned what the program.

Thankfully I stuck it out though because after just one month, my psoriasis was just about clear. Interestingly, I began to notice other changes in my body too - I craved fresh foods more, wasn’t bloating like I used to after I’d eat, and felt more energetic.

One thing I particularly loved was learning more about inner health & wellness from the wide variety of health professionals who were part of the program. There was so much wisdom within the group with Nutritionists, Dieticians, Personal Trainers, Yogi’s and Psychologists sharing their knowledge.

I really needed this extra layer of support because, during this time, my personal life was going through massive changes - I had sold my salon and moved to Bali to be with my partner at the time and I was questioning everything! I didn’t know what the next best step was for me and I felt lost and confused.

That’s when the offer to become an online Skin Therapist in the 16 week program I’d gotten so much benefit from was gifted to me!

It was a big ‘HELL YEAH’ from me but, after my experience, I knew I didn’t want to be just any Skin Therapist. My journey had taught me that skin health goes far beyond the outer layer of the skin and I wanted to teach people that topical and holistic treatments needed to come together if they wanted to achieve their maximum skin health and well being potential.

I made it my mission to educate people in the areas of:

  • Topical products

  • Gut health, and

  • Self love

… the three components I believed had the biggest influence on the health of my skin and management of my psoriasis.

Two years later, I’ve never looked back! My skin looks better than ever and I love that I get to impart this wisdom to people from all around the world and treat their skin in a way that has lasting effects not just to their appearance, but to their overall happiness!

If you’re someone who has tried to treat their skin but has not seen the results they’ve wanted them please reach out.
